Homeless man ignited 3 arson fires in Bay Area, police say

(KRON) -- A 34-year-old homeless man was arrested and accused of igniting at least three separate arson fires in South San Francisco and Colma.

One of the blazes sparked on October 20 along EL Camino Real and Hickey Boulevard in South San Francisco. Flames spread from brush to a nearby residence on Duvall Drive before firefighters doused the fire.

Later that day, Colma police said they received a 911 call from a witness who saw a man intentionally lighting a fire. Investigators wrote, "Colma police officers contacted and detained a 34-year-old unhoused male while he was walking away from the scene of the fire."

The man was in possession of a lighter and witnesses identified him as the arsonist. Through the investigation, the man was connected to a third arson fire, according to police.

The man, whose name was not released by law enforcement, was arrested. "Our detectives are conducting follow-up investigation to determine this male’s connection to additional unsolved/unreported incidents," the South San Francisco Police Department wrote.

Sacramento PD, Sac County Sheriff's Office seize guns, tow cars at 100-car sideshow, police say

(FOX40.COM) -- The Sacramento Police Department, with assistance from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, took down a sideshow that involved about 100 cars, according to the agencies.

On Saturday afternoon, Sac PD said it responded to reports of sideshow activity and found one that included 100 cars, which led to five tows, 12 citations distributed, four guns seized, and five arrests made.

"The Sacramento Police Department will continue to work with our regional law enforcement partners to conduct maximum enforcement at these illegal events," a news release from police read. "We remain committed to a zero-tolerance policy regarding these events."

The Sacramento Police Department and County Sheriff's Office broke up a sideshow on Saturday that involved about 100 cars. (Credit: Sacramento Police Department)

Authorities added that they have noticed a recent uptick in sideshow activity across the Sacramento region. "Sideshows pose a great danger to our community members and lead to vandalism and significant property damage."

Photos posted on social media show some of the guns taken by law enforcement and a black Mustang getting towed.

Another image shows another black sedan on the back of a tow truck, which means police likely impounded it.

"We would like to remind the public that participation in sideshow events can result in vehicles being impounded and can lead to fines and penalties up to and including arrest," the department concluded.

Man arrested in serial flower shop burglaries, police say

(BCN) -- A man was arrested early Saturday at a San Mateo florist shop where a burglar shattered the glass front door and took two cash registers -- just about like at another shop the night before, police said.

Andre Murphy, 51, of Oakland was taken into custody about 3 a.m. at Ah Sam Floral Co. when officers on patrol were alerted by a burglar alarm, police said. The burglar had shot out the front glass door with a BB gun and left two cash registers on the sidewalk, police said.

The scene was less than 800 feet from San Mateo Florist & Gift, where someone shattered the glass door and made off with a cash register Thursday night, police said.

KRON On is streaming now

"What in carnation? He couldn't buy himself flowers, so he broke in and stole a cash register," police said in a statement Saturday.

Security video showed the clothing worn by a man in Thursday's burglary matched what Murphy was wearing Saturday, police said.

The only difference was his shoes. A matching pair were found in Murphy's vehicle, police said. Murphy was arrested and accused of two counts of second-degree burglary.

3 arrested for helping suspect in 8-year-old's death hide, police say

MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Seven months to the day that an 8-year-old girl went missing, the Merced Police Department announced the arrest of a second suspect accused of her homicide.

8-year-old Sophia Mason was reported missing to the Hayward Police Department on February 10.

One month later, officials said her body was discovered inside of a bathtub at a Merced home.

On Sunday morning, Merced police held a press conference to discuss the details of Dhante Jackson's arrest the day prior in Newark, California.

“After several months of hard work, I’m proud to announce the arrest of Dhante Jackson for the murder of Sophia Mason,” said Lt. Joseph Perez during the press conference.

“Sophia's mother, Samantha Johnson was already in police custody charged with her murder, and the detectives immediately named Dhante Jackson also as a suspect in Sophia's murder, and that’s when the manhunt began,” added Lt. Perez.

While Johnson was arrested early in the investigation, officials said Jackson was able to elude police for nearly seven months

“Detectives acted on evidence quickly to track Jackson's location, but he had the help of several people to elude his capture,” Lt. Perez explained.

Detectives said Deburka Johnson of San Jose, Larona Larkins of Merced, and Mayra Gonzalez of Newark all helped Jackson hide from police.

“He had the help of several female acquaintances during the investigation they learned that several of these females had assisted Jackson by providing him with money, shelter, and transportation,” said Lt. Perez.

Lt. Perez, who led the investigation, said it was one of the worst cases of child abuse and neglect he’d ever seen.

“To know what that poor little angel went through at the hands of pure evil breaks my heart,” he said. “I will never understand how this could happen to a beautiful child who just wanted to be loved.”

When the body of Sophia was found inside the home, officials said she had been dead for nearly one month. The three women who allegedly helped Jackson elude police are all facing charges of accessory to murder after the fact.

Man threatened officer with large rock before fatal shooting, police say

GEYSERVILLE, Calif. (KRON) -- The Santa Rosa Police Department identified the man who was killed in a police shooting in Geyserville on July 29. David Pelaez Chavez, a 36-year-old Lower Lake resident, was shot and killed by a Sonoma County Sheriff's Office deputy.

Police also identified the deputies involved in the shooting -- Michael Dietrick, a five-year veteran of SCSO, and Anthony Powers, who has been with the sheriff's office for five months. Dietrick worked for the Clearlake Police Department for three years and 11 months before joining SCSO and Powers spent three years and four months with the San Francisco Police Department before SCSO.

SRPD described what happened leading up to the shooting in a press release sent out on Monday. It added context to the details SCSO provided after the incident.

SRPD said that Chavez's sedan was reported as suspicious on the 10000 block of Highway 128 in Geyserville around 7:30 a.m. Deputies found the car, but Chavez was not at the scene.

At 8:20 a.m., a citizen in Healdsburg reported to SCSO that an unknown person used a rock to try to break a window at his home on the 5200 block of Tre Monte Lane. He later told detectives that he saw Chavez walk to the exterior door of a bedroom and a use a rock to smash the windowpane.

The homeowner told Chavez to leave and fired two warning shots with a firearm, police said. Chavez then came across an employee of the homeowner and physically forced the employee away from their truck.

According to police, Chavez drove away, dragging the employee 20 feet. He drove through gates and fences before crashing in a ditch near the 5600 block of Tre Monte Lane. The employee was not seriously injured.

Carrying more rocks, Chavez went up to another nearby residence. The armed homeowner told Chavez to leave and Chavez then told the homeowner to shoot him, SRPD said.

After leaving that house, police said Chavez stole a "Gator-style utility vehicle" on the 5600 block of Thomas Road. He eventually crashed the vehicle on a rural road and ran more than a mile away without shoes.

KRON ON is streaming news live now

Deputies pursued Chavez and caught up to him in the creek bed of Franz Creek, about a mile east of where he crashed the utility vehicle. SRPD said he was armed with a large rock, a claw hammer, and a tool comprised of a pickax-style blade and a three-pronged fork.

One deputy tried to talk to Chavez and was threatened with a large rock, according to police. The deputy, who was standing in the water, went to find cover.

The second deputy asked Chavez to drop his weapons, but Chavez refused and yelled "nonsensical statements," per police. Chavez dropped the rock, picked up another "and made a movement that indicated he was threatening to hurl the rock at the deputy," SRPD said. The deputy fired three shots at Chavez. It is unknown how many times he was struck.

The deputies attempted to provide medical aid, but Chavez was pronounced dead 26 minutes after the shooting. An investigation is ongoing, and Dietrick and Powers were placed on paid administrative leave.

Driver claims she was 'following her GPS' down staircase, police say

(WFLA) — A 26-year-old woman who drove her SUV through a Portland, Maine, police pedestrian plaza and down a flight of stairs claimed she was "following her GPS instructions," according to police.

Officers with the Portland Police Department didn't buy the woman's claim, stating they "felt it was her excessive blood alcohol level" that led to the unusual crash.

The Officers said the woman, who appeared to be driving in a Toyota Highlander SUV, drove through the police department garage, across a pedestrian plaza, and down the stairs.

"We are fortunate that she didn't strike anyone and this ended with just a small amount of property damage," the Portland Police Department said in a Facebook post. "Please don't drink and drive."

The woman was issued a summons for allegedly operating a vehicle while under the influence.

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — Authorities reportedly found more than 80 cremated human remains while searching a vacant church in Akron, Ohio, on Tuesday, police confirmed to WJW.

Shawnte Hardin (Courtesy: Lucas County Sheriff's Office)

The search was reportedly part of an ongoing investigation against Shawnte Hardin, who is accused of running multiple illegal funeral businesses across the state.

The remains found at the property are believed to mostly be adults, police sources said, but some may have been children. They are thought to have been stored there for several years.

The Ohio Attorney General's Office confirmed to WJW that a warrant was executed in Akron on Tuesday as part of their investigation into Hardin, but the office would not confirm any other details as the investigation is ongoing.

In October, Hardin, who was 41 at the time, was indicted in Lucas County on 37 charges stemming from funeral services done without a license after two bodies were removed from a Columbus, Ohio, building he allegedly operated for makeshift funeral services, according to the Attorney General's Office. He had reportedly also operated businesses — under names such as Hardin Funeral Home, Inc. and American Mortuary Services — in Cuyahoga, Summit and Franklin counties at least since 2019.

1-year-old baby shot during argument, police say

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - An Oklahoma child is recovering at the hospital after being accidentally shot Monday.

Around 8 a.m., the 1-year-old boy's mother and her boyfriend were sitting inside a car when the two were arguing, according to the Oklahoma City Police Department. During the argument, the boyfriend's loaded gun dropped, officers say.

"I don't know specifically how it occurred, but a firearm had gone off inside that vehicle... striking the child," said Sgt. Dillon Quirk.

"It was just a whole bunch of commotion going on," said neighbor Keiontrey Hodges. "The baby momma was screaming out, 'You shot my baby' and 'you going to jail'... It shouldn't have to escalate that far."

"When she turned the baby around and she showed me the baby wound. It was... it looked nasty," Hodges added.

The couple attempted to take the child to the hospital but stopped on the way after spotting an ambulance.

The baby's mom was arrested. She faces a domestic violence in the presence of a minor charge, which is a misdemeanor.

The child is expected to be OK, police said.

Flight to LA diverted to Oklahoma after unruly passenger hits flight attendant, police say

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – A flight from Washington, D.C., to Los Angeles was diverted to Oklahoma City after a passenger assaulted a flight attendant, authorities said.

Capt. Arthur Gregory, of the Oklahoma City Police Department, confirmed to KFOR that the passenger hit a flight attendant Thursday night and that the plane had to reroute from its original destination and land at Will Rogers World Airport.

An air marshal who was on board the Delta Air Lines flight had the unruly passenger in custody when the plane landed in Oklahoma City, said Gregory. Police said the passenger also reportedly hit the air marshal.

Oklahoma City police officers escorted the suspect off the plane and detained him until the FBI arrived.

FBI agents questioned the man, who was being held at the Oklahoma County Detention Center. Charges were expected.

Officials did not provide the condition of the flight attendant or the air marshal.

Gregory did not have information on what led to the alleged assault.

The flight spent about an hour in Oklahoma City before continuing on to Los Angeles after the passenger was removed.

In a statement, Delta praised the “quick action and professionalism” of its crew and air marshals in handling the situation, and it apologized to customers "for the inconvenience.”

Attorney General Merrick Garland last month directed U.S. attorneys across the country to prioritize prosecutions of federal crimes that occur on commercial flights amid a historic spike in cases involving unruly passengers.

Pregnant hit-and-run driver fatally shot after instigating road rage incident, police say

(KTLA) – A pregnant woman was shot and killed in a road rage incident that stemmed from a hit-and-run crash over the weekend on a Florida street, police said Monday.

The incident happened after a 40-year-old motorcyclist was struck by a Kia in Orange City on Saturday evening, according to local authorities.

Orange City Police Department officials alleged that 35-year-old Sara Morales "intentionally hit" Andrew Derr, then fled.

Derr was uninjured and remained on the motorcycle. He and witnesses tried to get Morales to stop. She refused to pull over and they followed her in an effort to identify her, according to a police news release.

Morales drove to her home and called 911. She allegedly grabbed a gun from the house and went back outside to confront Derr and the witnesses, according to the release.

Derr had a handgun on him, and he drew the weapon and opened fire on Morales, hitting her multiple times, according to police, who said Derr had a valid Florida permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Morales was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Local television station WOFL reported that Morales worked for the Volusia County library system and was four to five months pregnant with her second child.

Derr remained on scene until officers arrived, and he is cooperating with investigators, police said.

A handgun belonging to Morales was found at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges were immediately filed, according to police.

Man burst into flames after Taser used on him, police say

CATSKILL, N.Y. (AP) — An upstate New York man was in grave condition at a hospital after police used a Taser to subdue him and he burst into flames, authorities said Friday.

The Times Union of Albany reported that 29-year-old man walked into the Catskill village police department last weekend and got into a confrontation with officers. Chief Dave Darling confirmed to the newspaper that officers deployed a Taser to subdue the man, who had just doused himself with hand sanitizer, and the man then burst into flames.

Darling said the officers were familiar with the man from previous encounters.

“I think they were afraid he was going to hurt himself, and that’s what started it,” Darling said. “There are still details that we’re trying to develop.”

The man was taken to the Westchester Medical Center’s Trauma and Burn Center, where he was in grave condition, the Times Union said.

The police chief described the situation as “horrible” and said it was under investigation by the Greene County district attorney’s office.

Kevin A. Luibrand, an attorney for the man’s family, declined to discuss details but said he had asked the police to preserve all recordings and written materials related to the encounter.

Darling said that his officers are not equipped with body cameras but that there are video cameras in the police station.

At least 2 dead in Idaho mall shooting, officer among several injured, police say

BOISE, Idaho (NEXSTAR) — Police in Boise, Idaho, say two people have died and at least four people, including a police officer, have been injured in a shooting at a shopping mall. They say a person is in custody.

Police on Twitter said Monday afternoon they were working their way through each business at the Boise Towne Square shopping mall, which is located in Idaho's largest city and is the city's largest mall.

"At this time we believe there was only a single shooter involved," Boise Police Chief Ryan Lee said at a news conference.

Around 3:15 p.m., Boise Police Dept. officials said they were still clearing the mall and officers were notifying the families of those involved. They asked people to avoid the area Monday.

Police were interviewing dozens of people outside the entrance to Macy's, one of five large department stores at the mall that has 153 stores in all.

Police said they were also investigating what appeared to be another crime scene at a restaurant near the mall.

"I am deeply, deeply sorry for the pain and trauma you experienced," Boise Mayor Lauren McLean said, addressing all affected by the shooting. She thanked police for their quick response, as well as shopkeepers at the mall who helped customers after the shooting broke out.

Cheri Gypin, of Boise, was in the mall with a friend where they walk for an hour three or four times a week. She said she heard several large bangs, but thought something had fallen from the ceiling. Then about 60 people, including families pushing strollers, came running at them, some of them shouting that there was an active shooter.

“My friend was trying to process it,” said Gypin, 60. “I just looked at her and said, 'We've got to run.' So we just ran and kept running until we got to the outer perimeter of the parking lot.”

They made their way back to their car, where police told the crowd of people who had fled the mall to leave the parking area.

This is a developing story and will be updated; the Associated Press contributed to this report.

1977 rape and murder of elderly North Carolina woman solved using DNA, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — More than 40 years later, the rape and murder of a 77-year-old woman has been solved after detectives took another look at the case and made a breakthrough using DNA evidence, Raleigh police said Wednesday.

According to police, Alma Jones was raped and killed in 1977. In 2011, 34 years after the crime was committed, the "case was revived when the box it was stored in had been discovered during a transfer of older case boxes."

After reviving the case, homicide detectives once again investigated the crime, and a DNA profile for the suspect was developed, police said. Based on the DNA profile developed by Othram, Inc., the suspect responsible for the rape and murder of Jones was Paul Crowder, detectives determined.

Crowder died in 2015. Police obtained a saliva sample from one of Crowder's family members and that confirmed he was the person who raped and killed Jones, officials said.

After consulting with the Wake County District Attorney's Office, it was determined that the case has been "exceptionally cleared," according to the release.

“While we recognize that this conclusion will not ease the pain and loss the family has experienced, we are pleased that they finally have resolution to something they have lived with for a long time,” said Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson. “Diligent, thorough investigation and follow-up by detectives have led to this moment.”
