2 dead 28 injured after Baltimore block party shooting: police

BALTIMORE (AP) — Gunfire erupted at a block party in Baltimore on Sunday — killing two people, wounding 28 and leaving an extensive crime scene that marred the U.S. holiday weekend, police said. Three of the wounded were in critical condition.

Baltimore Police Department Acting Commissioner Richard Worley told reporters there were a total of 30 victims during a press conference at the scene.

The shooting took place just after 12:30 a.m. at a block party in the Brooklyn Homes area in the southern part of the city, Worley said.

The shooting comes amid gatherings around the country leading up to the July Fourth holiday. Elsewhere, a shooting in Kansas left seven people with gunshot wounds and two more victims hospitalized after being trampled as people rushed out of a nightclub early Sunday morning, police there said.

Nine victims were transported by ambulance and 20 victims walked into area hospitals with injuries from the shooting, Worley said.

Nineteen of those victims were treated in the emergency department at MedStar Harbor Hospital, according to hospital spokesperson Debra Schindler. Nine of the critically injured patients were stabilized and transferred to Baltimore trauma centers. All but one of the 19 victims sent to MedStar have been released.

“As is protocol following any walk-in victim of violence, the hospital went on immediate lock-down to secure the campus and ensure the safety of all patients and associates," Schindler said in a statement. "Multiple critically injured patients were evaluated and triaged simultaneously by clinical staff, while hospital security managed the throng of family members that gathered in and outside of the emergency department.”

Meanwhile, dozen victims were sent to be treated at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and four others were sent to the University of Maryland Medical Center’s Pediatric Emergency Department, according to University of Maryland Medical System spokesman Michael Schwartzberg.

An 18-year-old woman was found dead at the scene and a 20-year-old man was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after, police said.

“I want those who are responsible to hear me, and hear me very clearly,” Mayor Brandon Scott said at the scene. “We will not stop until we find you, and we will find you. Until then, I hope that every single breath you take, that you think about the lives that you took, think about the lives that you impacted here tonight.”

No arrests were made immediately after the shooting. Scott asked anyone with information to come forward to assist investigators locate the “cowards” who were responsible for the shooting.

Gov. Wes Moore said his “heart breaks for these victims, their families, and the Baltimore community that is coping with the loss.”

“Maryland has had enough of watching gun violence continue to ravage our state and our nation,” Moore said in a statement. “The fact that these horrific shootings continue to take place is abominable. We as a state will continue to do everything we can to prevent senseless acts of violence like the one we saw last night.”

Authorities said the crime scene was extensive and that it will take some time for detectives to work it.

“Treat this as if it were your family,” Scott said. “How you would want people to treat it if you were mourning, if this was your neighborhood, if this was an event in your community that this happened at. We want you to treat it that way because that's how we have to treat each other as Baltimoreans.”

Hours after the shooting, a number of officers remained on the scene, working behind police tape amid densely packed two-story housing blocks. Folding tables and plastic cups were scattered around the scene, apparently left behind when people ran from the gunshots.

Lakell Nelson said there had been several false alarms of people mistaking the sounds of fireworks for gunfire earlier in the night while she was at the block party. However, by the time she was getting to her car, the actual shooting began.

“The shots were just going on and on and on,” she said.

That’s when two young women approached her and said they’d been shot, with one woman showing how a bullet had gone through her shorts.

Nelson said she told the women to get in the car and she sped through red lights to get to the nearest hospital.

“When I pulled up to the door of the hospital, my car was almost getting ready to be inside the hospital, because I was determined to get those babies in that hospital,” Nelson said.

The violence comes as federal prosecutors in Baltimore this week touted their efforts to reduce violent crime in the city. Police have reported nearly 130 homicides and close to 300 shootings so far this year, though that’s down from the same time last year. Authorities have vowed to crack down aggressively on repeat violent offenders.

2 dead, 8 others injured after shootings -- 1 officer-involved -- at Virginia Beach Oceanfront

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) -- Police confirm there are two people dead and numerous others injured after multiple shootings -- one of which was officer-involved -- at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront Friday night.

Police Chief Paul Neudigate said the preliminary count for the number of people shot is 10: A "male" was killed by police, a woman died from other gunfire, and eight were injured.

The eight people's injuries range from serious to life-threatening.

Neudigate said police officers on patrol responded to an initial shooting at 20th Street and Atlantic Avenue. Dispatchers said the calls came in around 11:20 p.m. EST. Neudigate said numerous shots were fired and eight people were injured.

As officers were actively working that scene, there were additional shots nearby, in the area of 20th Street and Pacific Avenue. Police responded to that gunfire, which led to an "individual being confronted by a uniformed Virginia Beach police officer, resulting in a police intervention shooting."

That person, a male of an unidentified age, was shot and killed by the officer, Neudigate said.

A second person, a woman who wasn't part of the officer-involved shooting -- and not believed to be a part of the original shooting incident at 20th Street and Atlantic Avenue -- was also shot and killed Friday night. She died at the scene.

Police said there is no suspect information in that shooting.

The chief also said an officer was struck by a car and taken to a hospital during the department's response at the Oceanfront. The officer's injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Chopper 10 flew over the resort area early Saturday morning and located several active police scenes.

"What you can see is we have a very chaotic incident, a very chaotic night in the Beach," Neudigate said. "Many different crime scenes."

WAVY News 10's Brett Hall went to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, where he found some family members and loved ones waiting in the parking lot, desperate to get information.

One man said his cousin had been shot. He said the hospital wouldn't confirm if his cousin was even a patient there.

Sentara spokesperson Dale Gauding said six of the victims were taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, one went to Sentara Princess Anne Hospital (that person has since been discharged) and one to the trauma center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Gauding said another two people walked into Sentara Virginia Beach General with injuries related to the incident.

Police said officers were working the scenes in the area between 17th and 22nd streets. Police asked people to avoid the area as they investigated.

Neudigate said that the Oceanfront scene was "stable" when he spoke briefly with the media around 1:45 a.m.

WAVY News 10 crews at the Oceanfront saw Virginia Beach police detaining multiple people around 1:30 a.m. The reason for their detention was not immediately clear.

Neudigate said police had multiple people who were in custody, but their involvement in the incident wasn't completely clear at that time.

The investigation into the officer-involved shooting will be conducted by the Virginia Beach Police Departments Detective Bureau, the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney, and the Virginia Beach Police Department's Office of Internal Affairs. The officer involved will be placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure.

The involved officer is assigned to the Special Operations Division and has been with the department for five years, police said.

BELOW: Police Chief Paul Neudigate briefly talks to the media at the Oceanfront on March 27, 2021.

Traffic cameras at the Oceanfront showed a large police presence and multiple roads blocked off. At least one ambulance could also be seen from the cameras.

VDOT Hampton Roads tweeted information saying that police activity had closed all eastbound travel lanes near mile-marker 25 on Interstate 264. That initial notice was put out around 12:20 a.m.

All eastbound lanes on I-264 at mile-marker 23.2 -- First Colonial Road north at Exit 21B -- in Virginia Beach and the entrance ramp were also closed as of 12:40 a.m. and remained closed until just after 5 a.m.

Police said more information would be released as it becomes available.

2 dead, 3 injured in San Jose church stabbing

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) - Two people are dead and three others seriously injured in a mass stabbing at a San Jose church Sunday night.

It happened as the church was opening its doors to the homeless to escape the cold weather.

Video shows the scene outside Grace Baptist Church at the corner of San Fernando and South 10th Street near San Jose State University.

Officers arrived on the scene to find five people had been stabbed, two fatally, says Sergeant Christian Camarillo.

"One of those persons was declared deceased at the scene, a second was transported to a local hospital where they were later declared deceased. Three others are still in the hospital receiving care. They are all in serious but stable condition, we do expect them to survive," Camarillo said.

An adult male has been arrested in connection with the stabbings.

A motive for the attack is not clear.

At this time, police believe the suspect acted alone, describing what happened as a 'random act of violence.'

"The church was not conducting any sort of religious service last night, it also used as a shelter for unhoused here in downtown San Jose. The people involved in this incident are directly related or involved with that unhoused shelter situation," Camarillo said.

A man who had been at the church earlier in the evening, but did not witness the violence, tells KRON4 the church had been opened to help get homeless people inside and out of the cold.

The first officers and firefighters on scene are being credited with saving lives, says Sgt. Camarillo.

"Now this is a very chaotic situation that these officers came into yesterday and the officers, along with the San Jose paramedics, went into this active scene and you know, did a great job rendering first aid to the three surviving victims. Usually the fire department will hang back a little bit and wait for us to secure the scene but last night, we had a lot of brave men and women out here at the scene that more than likely helped save these other three individuals lives," Camarillo said.

The two stabbings represent the city's 40th and 41st homicides of the year.

2 dead, 15 wounded in Vienna terror attack, authorities say

VIENNA (AP) — Gunmen opened fire on people enjoying a last night out at Vienna’s cafes and restaurants before a coronavirus lockdown Monday in what authorities said was a terrorist attack that left at least two dead — including one of the assailants — and 15 wounded.

“We are victims of a despicable terror attack in the federal capital that is still ongoing,” Austria’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said hours after the gunfire erupted.

“One of the perpetrators was neutralized, but several perpetrators appear to still be on the loose,” he said. “They seem to also, as far as we know, be very well equipped, with automatic weapons. So they were very well prepared.”

Police said that several shots were fired shortly after 8 p.m. (1900 GMT) on a lively street in the city center and that there were six shooting locations. Unverified footage on social media showed gunmen walking through the streets, apparently shooting at people at random, wounding several.

The motive was under investigation, but Kurz said the possibility it was an anti-Semitic attack cannot be ruled out, given that the shooting began outside Vienna’s main synagogue. It was closed at the time.

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said the army had been asked to guard key locations in the city as hundreds of heavily armed police hunted for the gunmen. He urged people in Vienna to stay indoors and avoid the city center and encouraged parents not to send their children to school on Tuesday.

Kurz praised police for killing one of the attackers and vowed: “We will not never allow ourselves to be intimidated by terrorism and will fight these attacks with all means.”

Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig said 15 people were hospitalized, seven with serious injuries.

Oskar Deutsch, the head of the Jewish community in Vienna, said it was not clear whether the main synagogue had been targeted.

Rabbi Schlomo Hofmeister said he saw at least one person shoot at people sitting outside at bars in the street below his window.

“They were shooting at least 100 rounds just outside our building,” Hofmeister said.

“All these bars have tables outside. This evening is the last evening before the lockdown,” he added. “As of midnight, all bars and restaurants will be closed in Austria for the next month, and a lot of people probably wanted to use that evening to be able to go out.”

French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted that the French “share the shock and grief of the Austrian people hit by an attack tonight.”

“After France, this is a friendly country that has been attacked. This is our Europe. ... We will not give in,” he wrote.

France has endured three attacks blamed on Muslim extremists in recent weeks: the wounding of two people outside satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo’s old headquarters; the beheading of a schoolteacher who showed students caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad; and a deadly knife attack Thursday in a church in the Mediterranean city of Nice.

All of the attacks were strongly condemned at the time by Austria’s chancellor.
