Time running out to remove sailboat stuck at Stinson Beach

STINSON BEACH, CALIF. (KRON) – The race is on to salvage a beached sailboat in Marin County before it is dismantled.

The 33-foot boat called “The Chandalar” drifted onto shore on July 31. Its captain says the boat veered off-course while on autopilot, getting stuck near Stinson Beach. The captain is hopeful a new attempt to get it back to sea is just around the corner.

“We have tried 30 different ways to get this out,” Captain Logan Walker said.

Walker owns the craft wedged into the heavy sand at Stinson Beach. For days, he, along with some volunteers, have labored to free the sailboat and allow Walker to sail back to Seattle.

Walker says they are pushing forward even after their failed efforts on Wednesday, but time is starting to run out. The Marin County Sheriff’s Department informed Walker his boat was an environmental hazard, and if it is not moved by August 31, it would be removed.

Logan struck back and got a temporary restraining order, with a hearing now set for September 7.

“Hope is running low, because this is the last high tide,” said Djuna, who was volunteering to help on Thursday.

Locals have come out to watch and lend a hand. A couple vacationing from Berkeley celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary even pitched in.

Logan says at times he is moved by all of the support.  A GoFundMe has been set up to help pay for equipment.

Driver in Vallejo police chase crashes into car, kills occupant before escaping: police

(KRON) -- One person is dead after a police chase in Vallejo on Wednesday led to a crash, the Vallejo Police Department said. The person being chased fled the scene before police could arrive, and they remain at large.

At about 5:35 p.m., VPD officers came across a Toyota Avalon that matched the description of a car that was involved in multiple armed robberies, according to police. Officers approached the car in the area of Tennessee Street and Tuolumne Street, and it sped away.

The driver was ignoring traffic lights and stop signs, per VPD. Police initiated a pursuit but lost sight of the car as it was traveling eastbound on the 3300 block of Tennessee Street.

About 30 seconds later, another police unit saw the car going westbound and weaving in and out of traffic on Springs Road near Mosswood Avenue. Officers made a U-turn to follow it.

Officers then saw a large cloud of debris and dust near Springs Road and Tregaskis Avenue, police said. They arrived at the site and determined that the Avalon crashed into two other cars.

The driver of one car died at the scene, according to VPD. The driver of the Avalon got away on foot.

Officers found a loaded gun in the Avalon. A female passenger in the Avalon was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The police department is working to identify the driver of the Avalon. Anyone with information is asked to contact VPD's Corporal Kenneth Trimble by phone at (707) 648-4011, or by email at Kenneth.trimble@cityofvallejo.net.

Charges filed against SF city employees for bribery

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Ever since the arrest of San Francisco Public Works director Mohammed Nuru back in 2020, federal prosecutors have been busy weeding out corruption at San Francisco City Hall.

Now, San Francisco’s district attorney is doing the same, charging a city employee and a former member of then-mayor Gavin Newsom’s staff with a variety of corruption charges including bribery.

"We have a job to enforce all laws in the city and county of San Francisco regardless of who breaks them," said SF District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.

At a news conference Thursday, Jenkins announced felony bribery charges against Lanita Henriquez, the director of San Francisco’s Community Challenge Grant Program, and Rudolph Dwayne Jones, the founder and president of RDJ Enterprises.

"In this situation, someone was being awarded San Francisco city contracts because he was paying off a city employee. That is illegal and it can't be tolerated in the city," Jenkins said.

Court documents allege Henriquez received checks totaling more than $32,000 from Jones’ companies. Her family members received more than $156,000 from Jones' companies -- some of which was also passed on to Henriquez.

In return, the district attorney alleges Henriquez entered into 23 city contracts totaling more than 1.4 million dollars with Jones’ companies or organizations associated with him.

"She received a bribe," Jenkins said of Henriquez. "He is who gave the bribes so they violate the same penal code sections or government code sections but in different ways."

The district attorney alleges this pay-for-play illicit activity went on from 2016 to 2020. Henriquez has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Jones is due to be arraigned Friday morning at the district attorney's office.

BART's new initiative to combat harassment on transit

(KRON) -- BART is addressing sexual harassment and gender-based violence when riding transit through a new initiative.

Starting Sept. 11, BART will run shorter trains to eliminate empty cars where some women have been targeted for harassment and assault. Service will be increased during the nights and weekends so riders to not have to wait for long periods of time at platforms.

Posters outlining safety tips are currently up on all BART train cars and stations.

Pamphlets informing people on how to report sexual harassment are available at BART's station booths.

(Poster: BART)

“This project understands the importance of making people feel comfortable on public transit, a place that is meant for everyone,” said Suarez, a senior at Oakland School of the Arts. “Being a part of this has made me hopeful; it shows me we’re not that messed up as a society. Even this small group is making a big impact."

Deputies nab 2 suspects in attempted bank robbery in San Leandro, hit-and-run of minor

(BCN) -- Two men have been arrested on suspicion of robbing a bank and the hit-and-run of a juvenile in San Lorenzo, the Alameda Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

Kevin Perry, 21, and Dewey Nguyen, 21, were arrested on suspicion of the attempted robbery of a Citibank and the felony hit-and-run of a juvenile in a crosswalk.

Police were initially searching for an unknown male in a dark hoodie and mask who entered the Citibank on Paseo Grande on Monday and passed a note demanding $20,000, "or the bank would be blown up," police said.

A second man in his early 20s with a slender build, wearing all-black clothing, a black backpack and red and black shoes acted as a lookout. Both men left the bank before any money was surrendered, police said.

The suspects got into a blue Ford Taurus and a brief vehicle pursuit by police ensued, but was ended for public safety after the suspects struck a juvenile walking across the street. The young victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

The Sheriff's Office's investigation led them to a residence in the city of Alameda, where they allegedly found the Taurus, both Perry and Nguyen, and a stolen Lexus sedan.

When deputies attempted to make contact with the pair, the suspects fled on foot. A perimeter was set up and they eventually surrendered, police said.

The Sheriff's Office alleges that Perry and Nguyen were wearing clothing that matched those worn on the day of the attempted robbery and hit-and-run. Perry, who was on parole with an "extensive criminal history," allegedly tried to hoist himself into a crawl space above the Sheriff's interview room but was foiled. Nguyen is also on probation for robbery.

Both were booked into Santa Rita Jail on various felonies.

Man picking up trash around the Bay Area invites others to join

(KRON) -- How many times have you walked by a pile of trash and thought, "hey… someone should really do something about that?" Well, UC Berkeley alum Andy Wang is a “someone” – who committed to do “something” years ago.

Every week, Wang says he spends five or six hours picking up trash around the Bay Area, usually by himself. He started doing it back in October of 2021. The Livermore resident was tired of seeing trash on his daily commute to Tracy. Before long, he moved on from cleaning up around his city, and started using satellite images to find pockets of trash all over the Bay Area.

He catalogs his cleanup efforts on his Instagram page and occasionally invites his followers to join in.  But Wang doesn’t mind doing the work himself.  He likes being outside, and he likes the feeling of making a difference. He hopes to inspire others to do the same, which would amplify his efforts to leave the Bay better than he found it.

Alleged Target shoplifter in jail after citing supposed new law that prohibits her arrest

(FOX40.COM) -- Chico Police Department arrested a woman under suspicion of shoplifting after she allegedly cited a new law that prohibited against theft arrests, law enforcement reported.

Chico Police Officers said they responded to Target on E. 20th Str., Chico, on Aug. 20 after they received a call from employees that a theft occurred.

According to reports, Target’s loss prevention team said they observed a female, later identified as Maria Ponce-Romero, 50, of Oroville, who loaded a cart with merchandise, pushed it out of the store and loaded it into a vehicle. Ponce-Romero then returned to the store to fill up another cart.

Police say that as Ponce-Romero attempted to leave the store a second time with a cart full of unpaid merchandise, she was contacted by Chico Police Officers. Ponce-Romero was allegedly in possession of around $1,200 worth of merchandise.

When questioned, police said that Ponce-Romero told officers she believed there was nothing officers could do about the theft once she left the store with the merchandise due to a change in shoplifting laws.

Chico Police Department said that is false and Ponce-Romero was subsequently arrested for grand theft and burglary.

Ponce-Romero was also found to be on felony probation out of Butte County and also arrested for violation of probation.

Giants pitcher Alex Cobb comes one out away from no-hitter

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco Giants pitcher Alex Cobb nearly tossed a no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday night. Cobb needed just one more out to accomplish the feat when Reds rookie Spencer Steer laced a line drive just out of Luis Matos' reach in right field.

Cobb finished the game with 131 pitches, a career-high. He struck out eight Reds hitters and allowed one run.

After allowing the hit, Cobb struck out Elly de la Cruz to end the game. The Giants won 6-1 against the Reds, who are one of their competitors for a National League Wild Card spot.

The no-hitter nearly ended in the eighth inning on a Will Benson blooper into shallow center field, but Austin Slater laid out to make the catch and preserve the feat. In the ninth inning, Cobb allowed a one-out walk to Nick Senzel and induced two fly balls to right field before Steer's double.

Through eight innings, the only baserunner of the game came in the third inning on a throwing error by third baseman Casey Schmitt.

Cobb was at 113 pitches at the end of eight innings, already more than his previous season-high of 109. His previous career-high was 117.

The no-hitter would have been the fifth of the MLB season. Yankees pitcher Domingo German threw a perfect game in Oakland on June 28, three Detroit Tigers combined for a no-hitter on July 8, and Houston's Framber Valdez and Philadelphia's Michael Lorenzen threw no-hitters in August.

The last Giants pitcher to throw a no-hitter was Chris Heston on June 9, 2015. Tim Lincecum threw the last two no-hitters before that.

Man crashes stolen car down embankment, dies on San Jose

(BCN) -- A man was killed Sunday morning in San Jose when the stolen car he was driving crashed into a creek embankment.

San Jose police were patrolling the area of Snell Avenue and Avenida Del Robles at 8:28 a.m. when they saw a stolen Kia sedan turn into a residential neighborhood west of Snell. Simone Biles makes history in the Bay Area, winning record 8th US Gymnastics title

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Simone Biles is not going to explain herself. Part of this is by design. Part of this is because she simply can't.

When the gymnastics star is at her best, as she was on Sunday night while winning her record eighth U.S. championship, she feels like she's in a “fever dream.” It's not autopilot exactly. It's more of a vibe. A flow.

It's in those moments that the doubts that still plague her almost daily even now, a decade into a run of unprecedented excellence, fade away.

There is no thinking. No overanalyzing. No “ twisties.” All of it recedes into the background. Her coach Laurent Landi calls it a skill. Biles, even at 26, won't go that far. Maybe because she simply doesn't want to.

She spent a long time, far too long, getting caught up in her head. She's intent on not doing it this around.

So yeah, she was smiling midway through a floor routine that made almost every other competitor on the floor stop what they were doing to watch and drew a standing ovation from a portion of the sellout SAP Center crowd. No, she can't explain why. When her coaches told her she'd nailed every tumbling pass, she was clueless.

“It just doesn’t feel real for some reason,” Biles said.

It is. Remarkably.

Ten years ago she was a teenage prodigy who doesn't remember much from her ascension to the top of her sport. She was always fixated on the next thing. World championships. Team camps. The Olympics.

Now she's a 26-year-old newlywed determined to enjoy this. For real. Six months ago she wasn't sure she was all in. Three weeks ago she returned to competition in Chicago feeling as if she was going to “throw up" every time she saluted the judges.

The woman who posted a two-day all-around total of 118.40 this weekend in northern California — four points clear of runner-up Shilese Jones and well ahead of Florida junior Leanne Wong in third place — is not ready to hit fast forward. She won. She's letting herself be happy this time. That didn't always happen before.

“We really try to celebrate our success individually and as a team just so that in a couple of years you can remember this,” she said. “Because I really don’t remember a lot from the past.”

She knows that gymnastics won't last “forever” even if, for her in a way it has.

Peaks aren't supposed to last this long. Most elite gymnasts at 26 — at least the ones who haven’t retired — are simply hoping to hold on to what they have.

The athlete who became the oldest woman to win a national title since USA Gymnastics began organizing the event in 1963 is not interested in that. Landi called Biles' floor routine in the finals the best he'd ever seen her do.

“I think it's maturity,” he said.

Biles' eight crowns moved her past Alfred Jochim, who won seven between 1925-33 when the Amateur Athletics Union ran the championships and the men's competition included rope climbing.

Yes, really.

The sport has come a long way over the last century. No one has spent more time at the far end of the Bell curve than Biles, whose singular talents continue to push boundaries.

She's training smarter these days, her only real acquiescence to the miles she's put on it for the last 20 years. While she remains one of the most visible active athletes in the Olympic movement, she's making it a point not to let the world in on every single little thing as she eyes a trip to Paris next summer.

Biles joked it's because people are “nosy.” The reality is, she'd just like a little privacy.

“I like to keep (my goals) personal, just so that I know what I'm aiming for,” Biles said. “I think it's better that way. I'm trying to move a little bit differently this year than I have in the past. I think it's working so far, so I'm going to keep it secretive.”

There appears to be more balance in her life, leaning into the “it's just gymnastics” mantra that helped fuel her rise.

Age hasn't caught up to her yet, though she played it relatively safe — by her standards — on Sunday. She tweaked her right ankle while drilling her electric Yurchenko double pike vault on Friday.

The 14.850 she received for her Cheng vault was still the highest of the night on the event. So was the 14.8 she earned on beam. That 15.400 on floor, too.

Next stop is Antwerp in late September, where Biles will try to add to the 25 world championship medals — 18 of them gold — she's captured so far.

Jones figures to be on the plane too. The 21-year-old is a marvel on bars, where she thrives despite being tall (5-foot-6ish) for someone who opts to do this for a living. The crowd erupted when she nailed her dismount, her 15.000 score was tops in the meet on the event and put 10 months filled with injuries that have slowed her training firmly behind her.

Who joins Jones and Biles at worlds remains very much up in the air.

Reigning Olympic champion Sunisa Lee, who has spent most of the year battling a kidney issue her doctors are still trying to get a handle on, could have a chance as a specialist.

Wong, one of several athletes trying to compete at the NCAA and elite levels at the same time, put together two stellar nights that included an elegant bars set and a floor exercise that makes up for in precision what it lacks in power.

Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles, teammates of Biles' at the 2020 Olympics, who have also spent the last two years splitting time between college and elite, weren't quite as sharp. Chiles fell off both the bars and beam. Carey finished in the top 10 on just one event — vault — where the Americans figure to be loaded.

Biles will lead the charge. She joked she asks herself every day why she's out there. The answer is simple. She feels like she owes it to herself.

"I still feel like I’m capable of doing it,” she said.

It certainly looks that way.

Nordstrom in downtown SF officially closes after more than 30 years on Market Street

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- After more than three decades as a staple retailer in downtown San Francisco, Nordstrom is closing its doors for good. Sunday is the last day customers can shop at the location inside Westfield Mall.

That Nordstrom location has been open since 1988 and will be closed for good by 5 p.m. Sunday. The store has four floors and spans over 30,000 square feet.

KRON4 was inside the store on its final day (view photos below).

Despite being the staple location of a major city, Nordstrom's decision to leave San Francisco is due to the city's "unsafe conditions for customers, retailers and employees," according to SF Supervisor Matt Dorsey.

Nordstrom joins other major retailers in downtown SF -- including Old Navy and Saks Off Fifth Avenue -- that have closed this summer. Nordstrom Rack across the street shut down operations in June.

Westfield, the mall Nordstrom is located in, announced in June it would be closing. Westfield has been operating on Market Street for more than 20 years.

In contrast to what seems like a mass exodus in downtown SF, one major retailer is moving into the area. IKEA opened a new location at 945 Market St. on Wednesday.

Is it time to bring back the COVID mask? We asked 3 doctors

(NEXSTAR) – The COVID-19 public health emergency may be over, but the spread of the virus sure isn't. COVID hospital admissions jumped another 21% last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

The summer surge has some people – who haven't donned a COVID mask in months – wondering if they should dust off their N95s.

We asked three medical doctors if they thought the rising cases and hospitalizations meant masks are needed now. For Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease expert at UCSF, the rationale hasn't really changed.

"Masking remains an inexpensive and portable way to reduce risk as always," he said.

Given the amount of the virus circulating now, Dr. Sherif Mossad, an infectious disease specialist at Cleveland Clinic, said those who are 65 and older or immunocompromised should consider masking in large crowds, especially when indoors.

Dr. Anand Parekh, chief medical advisor at the Bipartisan Policy Center, said that if you're going to mask up, make sure you're wearing a good one. N95 masks have better filtration than cloth masks, and are therefore better at preventing tiny viral particles from entering your system.

"One should consider the use of high-quality masks (e.g., N95) in public if residing in a community where public health officials note a significant escalation in cases and the individual is at high risk or lives with a family member at high risk," Parekh said.

Chin-Hong suggested asking yourself the following questions when you notice COVID cases are high in your community: "Are you older or immunocompromised and haven’t been infected or vaccinated in the past 6 months? Do you live with someone who is at high risk of getting seriously ill with an infection? Are you looking forward to travel (that long-awaited trip to Europe) or a concert (Beyonce) or a family gathering coming up that you can’t miss?"

If you don't want to risk getting sick, infecting someone in your household, missing a Beyonce concert, or calling out sick from your kid's birthday party, wearing a mask can help significantly drop the chances you'll catch COVID (or other airborne illnesses), Chin-Hong explained.

Large indoor gatherings and public transit are the "highest risk areas to consider for wearing a mask," Chin-Hong said.

"Of course, if you're in the same closed area with someone who is coughing or sneezing (and not wearing a mask), move as far away from them," added Mossad. "If you can't, then wear a mask – and politely offer one to them!"

With the recent rise in cases, more companies and organizations have asked their employees to put masks back on, including a few Kaiser Permanente hospitals and a couple of college campuses.

Jill Rosenthal, director of public health policy at the Center for American Progress, told The Hill summer surges of COVID-19 may be the new norm. “We have had a summer wave of COVID for the last few summers and so it’s not surprising to see an increase in COVID right now.”

While winter means more people socialize indoors (known to accelerate the spread of the coronavirus), summer means more people are traveling and socializing overall. Plus, in hot parts of the country, people are more likely to socialize and spend time in the air-conditioned indoors than they are to be outside.

I am so proud of the trailblazing work Barker and I did together to expose the cruelty to animals in the entertainment industry and including working to improve the plight of abused and exploited animals in the United States and internationally. We were great friends over these 40 years, and he will be missed.

Barker retired from hosting “The Price is Right” after 50 years on TV in 2007.

This is a developing story.

Families of victims speak out against Alameda County DA Pamela Price

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) – Family and friends of murder victims held a press conference on Friday to support the effort to recall Alameda County’s top prosecutor. A notice of intent was filed in the county last week to recall District Attorney Pamela Price.

The group calling for Price's recall is known as Save Alameda For Everyone or "SAFE." As of last week, 127 signatures have been collected and certified in Alameda County, and DA Price has responded to the recall petition.

"What I'm not going to do is be intimidated to not stand up for these families. I'm going to continue until we get the job done,” said Brenda Grisham, who is leading the effort to recall Price.

Grisham is referring to a letter she received from Price.

KRON4 reached out to Price’s office for comment on the claims. A spokesperson sent a letter to Grisham, listing Price’s accomplishments over eight months in office.

Friday’s news conference took place on what would have been Grisham’s son Christopher Jones’ 30th birthday. Jones was 17 years old when he was shot and killed in 2010.

Standing by her were other victims’ families and friends who lost their loved ones to gun violence

"You never think it can happen to you and it can. Unfortunately, that's who I'm fighting for. Not just Kevin, but for others as well, so we need justice and we need Pamela Price to be recalled,” said Virginia Nishita, the widow of Kevin Nishita

The effort to recall Price is underway after the signatures needed to push the movement forward were certified in the county earlier last week.

"Our message that we are sending to the public is these are the people you need to be standing behind because at any time you can be one of them,” Grisham said. “Laws are laws, there's a judicial system, there are judges and there's a jury. We need to let the powers that be hand down the sentences."

The recall group has to gather more than 90,000 signatures to get the recall on the ballot. The group expects the recall campaign to cost roughly $8 million.

San Jose mayor takes aim at negligent building owners

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan is taking aim at property owners who have vacant buildings in the city. He says the owners aren't doing enough to keep the buildings from deteriorating.

According to Mahan, urban blight such as the long vacant First Church of Christ Scientist will not go ignored. "Behind me is a symbol of negligence that will no longer be tolerated in the City of San Jose," Mahan said.

The mayor says the city will be taking a proactive approach to addressing deteriorating properties by considering an increase in penalty caps from $100,000 to $500,000. He hopes it will force the owners of the church, China-based Z&L Properties, to fix up the site.

"We have what should be a civic pride that's turned into a point of frankly embarrassment for our city and we're not going to stand for that any longer," Mahan said.

Councilmember Omar Torres says his office has been flooded with constituents calling the site "trashbag church".

"I will not allow this historically significant property to continue to deteriorate. We are giving our residents false promises in our abilities to address significant blight issues in our city," Torres said.

If the $500,000 fine cap proposal is passed later this month, Z&L Properties will be fined $10,000 a day until the limit is reached. The city is also exploring the possibility of repurchasing the site.

"We are going to find every tool in the toolbox for holding Z&L accountable for properly protecting and maintaining this incredible historical landmark," Mahan said.

The fine cap proposal is set to go before a committee starting next week. The mayor says in the meantime, the code enforcement department will be sending officers to start issuing citations.

San Francisco to upgrade public warning system

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) -- San Francisco is planning to upgrade an abandoned siren system for emergencies or disasters, days after Maui failed to sound a wildfire warning with tragic results.

Mayor London Breed and Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin announced plans Thursday to prioritize upgrading the city's Outdoor Public Warning System. The siren system's tests every Tuesday at noon were a familiar part of San Francisco life until 2019, when they were shut off because of fears the system could be hacked and manipulated.

"The recent devastation in Maui was a tragic example of how important emergency notifications to residents, businesses and tourists are," Breed said in a statement.

The first phase of the upgrade and implementation is expected to begin within six months and cost about $5 million, according to the mayor's office.

In addition to the outdoor warning system, the city can send emergency messages to any cell phone within a specific geographic area.

Maui's outdoor siren warning system was not activated when wind-whipped flames spread rapidly across Lahaina and other areas to become the deadliest wildfire in modern U.S. history.

City council takes control over Antioch police chief hiring

(KRON) -- The Antioch City Council has voted to take control of the hiring, firing and evaluation of the city's future police chiefs. The city manager will no longer be responsible for those tasks.

Both positions of city manager and police chief are currently vacant in Antioch. This all comes as nine current and former police officers are facing federal charges after a raid last week by the FBI.

The officers are accused of committing several crimes including coverups and multiple conspiracies. In an unsealed grand jury indictment, the officers are also accused of collecting “trophies” from crime scenes and displaying them on a mantle.

The new order takes effect 90 days after the second reading of the new ordinance which presumably would happen at the next council meeting. This would give the city council time to hire an interim police chief.

Activist group installs barriers near Oracle Park after girl on stroller killed

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Taking a swipe at SF officials, an activist group in San Francisco took matters into their own hands at an intersection where a 4-year-old was killed last week. On Monday, San Francisco Mayor London Breed directed staff to make changes to the intersection, but the group said the plans were going to take too long.

The change just includes a few cones, but people who live in the area say it is significant.

This is what the intersection of Fourth and King in San Francisco looked like Wednesday afternoon -- cones and plastic barriers now up blocking one of two turn lanes.

It was here on Aug. 15 when a driver hit and killed a 4-year-old girl in a stroller. The girl's father was critically injured.

A group calling themselves Safe Street Rebel on social media said they took action overnight citing the city's timeline of three weeks time to alter the intersection was too long to wait.

"This intersection is very bad. I cross it all the time with the boy I watch and it is terrible, cars never stop, you have to make eye contact always," said SF resident Cami Perra.

"Well, I am not sure they should have done it, I am not sure anyone should do that, but they did and who knows what will happen next," said SF resident Everett Phillips.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency did not reply to our many requests for comment about the changes to the intersection, including whether they will leave the cones alone, or rip them out.

They did say the intersection has been the site of 12 crashes, including a pedestrian being struck in 2020. That person was not seriously hurt but the area is known to be in the city's high injury network.

The SFMTA also plans to change the signal putting in a yellow light in hopes that it will remind drivers to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. The agency did not provide a timeline for that work.

Investigators have not released the name of the little girl killed or gave an update on her father's condition. The driver involved was arrested on three counts of failure to yield to pedestrians and one count of vehicular manslaughter.
