Officer injured after suspected DUI driver crashes into San Rafael police vehicle

(KRON) -- An officer was injured after a DUI driver crashed into a police vehicle overnight Saturday, the San Rafael Police Department (SRPD) said. The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Francisco Boulevard East and Bellam Boulevard.

A Dodge Dart was speeding, ran a red light and broadsided the police car, according to SRPD. Authorities said the force of the collision pushed the police car nearly 100 feet.

The driver of the Dodge was arrested after police found they were under the influence of alcohol. The officer suffered "minor injuries" and was taken to the hospital. The officer was released from the hospital and is recovering at home, police said.

Photos from the scene of the collision can be viewed below.

The driver was booked into Marin County Jail on charges of a DUI, felony DUI resulting in injury and driving without a license.

Source: Draymond Green sprains ankle days before Dubs' training camp, out for weeks

(KRON) -- Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green sprained his left ankle, a source told KRON4's Jason Dumas. Dumas, citing a source, tweeted Saturday that Green's recovery could be anywhere between three to six weeks.

It is unknown at this time how and when Green, 33, suffered the injury.

Last season, Green played 73 of 82 regular season games. In the offseason, the four-time All-Star signed a 4-year, $100 million contract with Golden State after opting out of his prior contract to become a free agent.

The prior year, however, Green played only 46 games primarily due to a back injury that kept him out for two months. Despite missing nearly half the season, Green recovered in time for the playoffs to help the Warriors win the 2022 NBA Finals.

The Warriors' training camp is set to begin on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Their first preseason game is on Saturday, Oct. 7 at Chase Center against the Los Angeles Lakers.

More information about Green's injury should come out on Monday during Warriors Media Day.

This story will be updated.

Persistence paid off, Metro says after jury indicts Duane 'Keffe D' Davis for Tupac Shakur's murder

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Twenty-seven years after the death of rapper Tupac Shakur, a Las Vegas-area grand jury has indicted a man with the icon’s murder, the 8 News Now Investigators confirmed Friday.

"Ultimately, our persistence in this investigation paid off," Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Jason Johansson said Friday during a news conference.

He said Metro detectives had a lot of information about the crime but didn't have the necessary evidence until recently to arrest 60-year-old Duane “Keffe D” Davis. A Clark County grand jury voted to indict him on a charge of murder with a deadly weapon with a gang enhancement. Police arrested Davis early Friday near his home, prosecutors said.

Davis wrote a book and did several interviews where he said he was in the car with the person who shot Shakur and record executive Suge Knight near the Las Vegas Strip in September 1996. Shakur died six days later from his injuries.

During the grand jury return hearing on Friday, Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo said Davis' public statements implicated him, adding Davis allegedly ordered Shakur's death.

“Today justice will be served in the murder of Tupac Shakur,” Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said. "I know a lot of people have been watching and waiting for this day.”

The shooting of Shakur at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane followed a fight earlier in the night. In the hours before the murder, Shakur’s group reportedly attacked Orlando Anderson, a member of a rival gang.

In July, Las Vegas Metro police searched a Henderson home as part of the investigation, the 8 News Now Investigators first reported. The search near Interstate 11 and Wagon Wheel Drive involved documents, personal items and ammunition belonging to Davis.

Police also seized photos and electronics. Neighbors told 8 News Now that a family member of Davis’ lived in the residence, though Davis’ name and the home’s address were written on the warrant.

Videos of the July 17 raid show police talking to two people as they exit the home. The man in the videos appears to be Davis.

Davis has said he and Anderson were in the car that pulled side-by-side to Shakur’s after the fight. Someone in the back seat then fired a gun, Davis said.

Anderson died in a shooting in 1998. Davis has publicly said he is Anderson’s uncle. No one else who was in the shooter’s car, except for Davis, is alive.

Davis made several public statements about the night of the shooting, including in TV interviews and in a 2019 book titled “Compton Street Legend: Notorious Keffe D’s Street-Level Accounts of Tupac and Biggie Murders, Death Row Origins, Suge Knight, Puffy Combs, and Crooked Cops.”

“Tupac made an erratic move and began to reach down beneath his seat,” Davis writes in the book. “It was the first and only time in my life that I could relate to the police command, ‘Keep your hands where I can see them.’ Instead, Pac pulled out a strap, and that’s when the fireworks started. One of my guys from the back seat grabbed the Glock and started bustin’ back.”

“When we pulled up, I was in the front seat,” Davis said in a 2018 BET interview. “Happen to see my friend, Suge.”

“You said the shots came from the back,” the interviewer asks Davis in the BET video. “Who shot Tupac?”

“Going to keep it for the code of the streets,” Davis said. “It just came from the backseat, bro.”

It was unclear Friday why the case was suddenly moving ahead after more than two decades.

“The older your case gets as a prosecutor, the weaker your case gets,” former Clark County prosecutor Thomas Moskal said. “Witnesses, they go missing, they leave, they die, their memories fade. Evidence isn't preserved. You can't go back and now start retesting things from the crime scene. if something wasn't done, it wasn't done.”

Davis has said the car he was in pulled up side-by-side to Tupac’s BMW at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane before someone in the backseat fired a gun. (KLAS)

Moskal said he expected prosecutors to use Davis' own statements against him.

“They have his own statements saying he was there,” Moskal said. “He's going to have to make the argument that either, ‘I wasn't there and I lied the whole time' or 'I didn't know what was going on and I lied the whole time.’ But how do you overcome that? Basically, he would have to take that stand and say, ‘I lied before believe me now.’”

Davis refers to himself as “Keffe D” in his book. He is sometimes also referred to as “Keefe D” or “Keefy D.”

There is no statute of limitations for when prosecutors can file murder charges in Nevada. Police have never filed charges in connection with Shakur’s murder.

Davis was being held without bail and was expected to appear in court Wednesday for his arraignment.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, SF native, has died at 90

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, a centrist Democrat who served as California’s senior senator since 1992, has died. She was 90.

The senator's office confirmed Feinstein passed away Thursday night at her home in Washington, D.C.

The longtime California senator was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992 after winning a special election and was serving her sixth term at the time of her passing. Feinstein was California’s first woman senator.

Earlier this year, Feinstein announced that she would not seek reelection in 2024. She faced calls to resign as she battled health issues in recent months and was the oldest sitting senator.

In a statement from the senator's office, Chief of Staff James Sauls said, "Her passing is a great loss for so many, from those who loved and cared for her to the people of California that she dedicated her life to serving." Continuing, "There are few women who can be called senator, chairman, mayor, wife, mom and grandmother. Senator Feinstein was a force of nature who made an incredible impact on our country and her home state. She left a legacy that is undeniable and extraordinary."

Reactions from around the nation started shortly after reports of Feinstein's passing. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) said on X, "This is a sad day for California and the nation. Sen. Feinstein was a champion for our state, and served as the voice of a political revolution for women. My profound condolences go out to her family and loved ones."

Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) said, "Senator Feinstein was a political pioneer with a historic career of public service." Former Secretary of State and Senator Hillary Clinton said she would miss Feinstein greatly as a friend and colleague, stating, "She blazed trails for women in politics."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) arrives to the Capitol for a series of nomination votes on Thursday, February 16, 2023.

Feinstein, born June 22, 1933, in San Francisco, served as the mayor of SF for three terms from December 1978 to January 1988. During this time, Feinstein faced turmoil, including the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk. Feinstein then succeeded Moscone as the mayor, serving as the first woman in that position.

Before becoming a U.S. senator, Feinstein unsuccessfully ran for governor of California in 1990.

Feinstein had a storied political career that broke gender barriers as she rose from San Francisco’s City Hall to leadership posts in the U.S. Senate. She played key roles in political battles over issues including reproductive rights and environmental protection, gaining a reputation as a pragmatic centrist.

As a San Francisco native, Feinstein attended and graduated from Stanford University

Oakland town hall attendees mostly in favor of reinstating Armstrong as OPD chief

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) – On Thursday, the Oakland Police Commission held a town hall to discuss if they should recommend the mayor to reinstate former Oakland police chief LeRonne Armstrong. Attendees were eager to share their opinions on the matter.

People came out to the town hall and they overwhelmingly supported former Armstrong being reinstated. Very few people spoke against him being reinstated.

"Not surprised,” said Oakland Police Commission Chair Tyfahra Milele. “We have had five public forums. We have heard from 350 people before tonight. Over and over again we heard the same thing when we ask, ‘What do you want in a new chief?’ They say we want LeRonne Armstrong."

Milele says they canceled a meeting Thursday because not enough commissioners attended.

"Folks who for whatever reason abstained from participating could possibly prevent us from recommending any chief,” she said.

Milele says she knew this would happen so they preemptively planned a town hall to ask the community if they think the commission should recommend the mayor give Armstrong his job back. Most said yes.

"I'm strictly for Chief Armstrong,” one attendee said. “I believe in him. He's going to do a great job for Oakland."

Jenny Zilliac held up a sign during the town hall that read, “I support Mayor Thao. Let her lead.”  She was in the minority speaking in favor of Mayor Sheng Thao’s decision to fire the chief back in January after a federal monitor report found that Armstrong failed to discipline an officer for misconduct.

"I think it's a slap in the face for them to recommend he be reinstated,” Zilliac said. “It's a waste of time. This is a decision Sheng Thao made. She has the authority to make that decision and it's a done deal."

The Anti-Police Terror Project also released a statement opposing Armstrong's reinstatement, saying:

"Throughout Armstrong's tenure, the OPD was mired in numerous scandals, ranging from officers employing excessive force against Black children during the George Floyd protests to willfully ignoring instances of racist and sexist misconduct within the department."

The Oakland Police Commission chair hopes to have full attendance at the Oct. 12 meeting so they can vote on whether they want to recommend reinstating Armstrong.

Martinez PD releases bodycam video of police shooting

WARNING: The video above contains graphic content.

(KRON) -- The Martinez Police Department released bodycam footage on Thursday of a fatal police shooting that happened in August.

On Aug. 18, four officers fired their weapons, killing one person. The shooting happened outside a cannabis dispensary called Velvet, located at 4808 Sunrise Drive, that police said was the target of an attempted burglary.

Police released three bodycam videos. The camera belonging to the fourth officer was not turned on until five minutes after the shooting, police said.

On each bodycam video, approximately 30 seconds are muted. The sound appears to come on after the shots are fired. One of the bodycam videos can be seen using the video player above. Links to the other videos, which also include surveillance video from the dispensary, can be found HERE.

"The first 30 seconds of each body worn camera video is a pre-event buffer and does not have audio. The pre-event buffer captures 30 seconds of video (without audio) before the camera is activated," Martinez police said.

The videos are between 30 and 75 seconds long. Police said the full-length videos are not being released yet.

"The full length of the body-worn camera footage is not being released currently due to the active criminal and administrative investigations regarding the incident," MPD said.

The suspect who officers shot at was driving a blue Infiniti that police said was stolen in Livermore on Aug. 12. A loaded gun was found in the passenger's area of the car, per MPD. The gun was bought in Arizona in January and is linked to an Oakland shooting that happened on April 27.

The four officers who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave after the shooting. The Department of Justice is investigating their use of force.

"At the conclusion of their investigation, DOJ will provide a public report containing their determinations regarding the lawfulness of the use of force as well as their findings and recommendations regarding the policies and practices of the Martinez Police Department," Martinez police said.

Hateful comments lead to virtual comment ban at Bay Area school board meeting

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (KRON) – Some boards are starting to take action after public meetings across the Bay Area got bombarded with hateful comments made virtually. Santa Rosa city schools hosted their first meeting without any online comments on Wednesday.

Racist, antisemitic and homophobic comments took over the Santa Rosa city schools district's last meeting just two weeks ago, all over Zoom. The board decided to take swift action and immediately eliminated virtual comments.

“I was shocked,” said Gabriel Albavera, a Santa Rosa school district official. “I was hurt, I was taken aback. Granted, it was online so I kind of took it with a grain of salt to a degree.”

Santa Rosa City Schools Board of Education believes a barrage of hateful virtual comments attempted to distract board members at their Sept. 13 meeting.

“It’s easy to make those comments when you’re behind a screen as opposed to being in person,” Albavera said.

Albavera was at the meeting. He says he’s been a part of the district for decades, both as an educator and as a parent.

He says he’s never experienced organized hate like this. He took to the podium Wednesday to thank the board for ending online comments.

“I thought they showed courage. I thought they showed an ability to take a stance. I’m extremely, extremely proud of our school board,” he said.

Similar anonymous, online hateful comments have happened at meetings across the Bay Area. In June, antisemitic comments were made during a Walnut Creek city council meeting.

More recently, the comments have continued at meetings in Sonoma, Marin, South San Francisco, and Livermore. On Tuesday night, hateful commenters called into the San Francisco city supervisors' meeting, prompting the board president Aaron Peskin to say enough is enough.

“I fought to have unlimited remote public comment,” he said. “I will be introducing a change to the board rules. This will be done. Ain’t gonna happen in these chambers, in this city. It is over.”

In Santa Rosa, the district says they don’t plan to bring back online comments for the foreseeable future.

Oakland Roots unite Oakland's Hispanic community

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) – The Oakland Roots Soccer Club has found a way to both embrace their heritage and put down new “roots” to start a legacy.

They do so by showcasing the sport’s ability to bring cultures together and celebrating the city they call home. The Roots have fans all across the Bay Area, and players say many times it’s the Hispanic heritage and Spanish language that connects them more than anything.

The Hispanic population in Oakland accounts for about 27% of the city, according to the U.S. Census. Roots player and Ecuador native Jeciel Cedeño says it’s a population that feels like home, especially on game day.

“You have Mexicans, Colombians, Ecuadorians, Hondurans. And it’s very nice to see all these people going to the stadium, and you can feel the support,” he said.

The Oakland Roots have been getting that support since 2018 when the team was built with the purpose of uniting, inspiring and bringing hope to the Oakland community. Cedeño says for the Hispanic community, those are necessary, especially for those who are first-generation.

“Living in Ecuador, you’re found in different situations where you don’t have the best of everything, but you can make the best out of every single thing,” he said.

Oakland Roots head coach Noah Delgado, who is from Fremont, says having this professional team in Oakland is a game-changer for Hispanics – especially for Hispanic kids.

“What the club does and represents helps to motivate some of the young kids in in the community that see people like them playing professional soccer,” he said.

The love for soccer -- or “futbol” as it’s said in Spanish – is endless for many Hispanics. The Oakland Roots provide that sense of home for them.

When it comes to the kids, Cedeño says every game he can see the hope in their eyes.

“That’s why when they asked me for my autograph, I’d rather stay, give it to every kid, because I know what it means to them. Because I was the kid once,” he said.

Right now the team is working to try and build a facility next to the Oakland Coliseum. It hopes to bring an even larger fanbase, connecting people of all backgrounds and giving those with Hispanic heritage a small sense of home.

Powerball ticket worth nearly $800K sold in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- The Powerball Jackpot for Wednesday night's drawing was set at $850 million, and while nobody in California matched the five winning numbers with the Powerball number, a player in San Jose still won big money.

At a Quick Stop located at 5 Stewart Ave, one player drew the five winning numbers, but not the Powerball number. That ticket is worth $796,425, according to the California Lottery website.

No other lottery players in California drew all five numbers. Five people matched four winning numbers with the Powerball numbers. Those tickets are worth $23,318.

The winning numbers are 47, 63, 1, 46, and 7, with a Powerball number of 7.

The $850 million jackpot is the second-largest jackpot of the year. In July, a California lottery player hit a $1.08 billion jackpot.

Town hall to be held on Oakland's search for police chief

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) – The search continues for a new police chief in Oakland. On Thursday, the community will get their chance to weigh in, as many people are calling for former police chief LeRonne Armstrong to be reinstated.

The police commission is holding a town hall, and the commission chair says that the meeting will happen even if the full commission does not show up.

Shortly after taking office earlier this year, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao fired Armstrong following an investigation by a law firm hired by a federal monitor overseeing the Oakland Police Department, which found that Armstrong failed to discipline an officer for misconduct. An appeals court arbitrator would later clear Armstrong of any wrongdoing.

The former general counsel of the Oakland NAACP, Robert Harris, makes the case for being in favor of the police commission including Armstrong at the top of the list of candidates for his old job.

"We are convinced that is the appropriate thing to do,” he said. “As a matter of fact, if you look at the hearing officer's report in this matter, which was issued a couple of weeks ago, she recommended that the discipline against him be reversed."

Armstrong has stated that while he was chief of OPD, he brought the department within months of being in full compliance with federally mandated reforms. According to a weekly Oakland police crime report, violent crime is up 27% from this time last year when Armstrong was leading the department.

The Anti-Police Terror Project (APTP) is not in favor of rehiring Armstrong. Their reasons include:

"The failure of the ceasefire program under his tenure, which shows that when violence interrupters are taken off duty and it is left to police officers to interrupt cycles of violence, it's an abject failure,” said James Burch, the APTP’s deputy director.

Oakland Police Commission Chairperson Tyfahra Milele talked about why it is critical for the town hall to happen.

"It's important because we need to hear from the community. What do they want? What are their hopes for our chief? Do they want to reinstate the previous chief? Do they want to move forward with a new chief? We represent them. That's why it is important to hear their voice," she said.

The town hall is on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Oakland City Hall.

President Biden continues campaign events in the Bay Area Wednesday

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- President Joe Biden is waking up at San Francisco’s Fairmont hotel today as he starts his second day in the Bay Area. On Wednesday, Biden will be attending several campaign events.

The president landed at Moffett Federal Airfield in Santa Clara County Tuesday afternoon before taking a helicopter to San Francisco to attend a couple of private fundraisers. The president also stopped at another private fundraiser in Atherton along the way.

On Wednesday, Biden plans to meet with scientists on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, but there will be a couple more private fundraisers as he seeks reelection in 2024.

Biden is quite familiar with the Bay Area as this is his third visit in six months. Six months ago, he was touring storm damage, and three months ago, he was meeting with tech leaders to learn more about artificial intelligence as well as campaigning.

Road closures were in effect surrounding the Fairmont hotel overnight, where Biden was sleeping. More closures are expected Wednesday as the presidential motorcade moves to fundraisers.

After leaving the Bay Area Wednesday evening, President Biden is expected to visit Phoenix on his next stop.

Colin Kaepernick pens letter to New York Jets asking to be signed to practice squad

(KRON) -- Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick wrote a letter to the New York Jets making his case that the team sign him to its practice squad.

Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since 2017. The Jets lost their starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a torn Achilles tendon in the first game of the NFL season.

Kaepernick's letter was posted on Instagram by rapper J. Cole on Tuesday. Kaepernick wrote the letter on Thursday of last week. Cole said that Kaepernick was initially reluctant to have the letter posted publicly, but Cole said he wanted it out there because "the people and all organizations should know the truth about how hard he works and how much he still wants to play."

Since Rodgers went down, the Jets turned to backup Zach Wilson to be the team's starting quarterback. Kaepernick, who reportedly reached out to the Jets through his agent earlier this month, acknowledged Wilson in the letter and said that he is only asking to join the Jets' practice squad to practice against the Jets' defense and help them prepare for their next opponent.

He said the benefits to the team signing him would be that his athleticism would help the defense prepare for mobile quarterbacks on New York's schedule such as Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts. It would also give the team a contingency plan if Wilson gets injured without putting any pressure on Wilson, Kaepernick said.

"Worst case scenario, you see what I have to offer and you're not impressed. Best case scenario, you realize you have a real weapon at your disposal in the event you ever need to use it," Kaepernick said.

He added that he has maintained a rigorous training schedule while he has been out of the league. He listed former 49ers head coaches Jim Harbaugh and Chip Kelly as references, as well as Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis.

Kaepernick worked out for the Raiders in May 2022, according to CBS Sports.

The Jets did bring in a quarterback on Tuesday, however, it was not Kaepernick. The Jets announced that they agreed to a deal with veteran quarterback Trevor Siemian.

Kaepernick sparked league-wide protests when he kneeled for the United States national anthem before games during the 2016 to protest police brutality. He threw 16 touchdowns and four interceptions for the 49ers that season, but the team won just one of the 11 games he started. He has not played since.

The Jets have won one of their three games to open the season. Zach Wilson has completed 52.4% of his passes and thrown two touchdowns to four interceptions in those games.

CHP: Over $600K worth of drugs seized from Oakland residents in Fresno County

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Two Oakland residents were arrested after officers seized over $600,000 worth of fentanyl and methamphetamine during a traffic stop, the California Highway Patrol said on Tuesday.

CHP says on Friday, around 6:00 p.m., CHP conducted an enforcement stop on a 2009 Toyota Camry for a traffic violation. The stop occurred on northbound I-5 at Nees Avenue in Fresno County. During the contact, the sergeant determined the driver and female passenger were unlicensed.

While conducting a vehicle inventory prior to impounding the Toyota, the sergeant says to have located approximately 42 pounds of crystal methamphetamine in the trunk. The sergeant also located approximately two pounds of fentanyl powder while searching the interior of the vehicle. The drugs had an estimated street value of $601,360.

CHP identified the driver as 23-year-old Christhofer Armando Galvez of Oakland and the passenger as 33-year-old Seidy Aleman Lopez of Oakland. Officers say they were arrested and the case was turned over to the Fresni High Impact Investigation Team (HIIT).

Officers say Galvez and Lopez were booked into the Fresno County Jail on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl for sale, and transportation of methamphetamine and fentanyl across noncontiguous counties.

Stanislaus deputy arrested for sex crimes against a minor

(FOX40.COM) -- Stanislaus County Deputy Matthew Dessert was arrested Tuesday for allegedly committing multiple sex crimes against a teenager over a span of nearly five years.

Stanislaus County detectives say they were contacted by a school counselor at around 8:30 a.m. on Monday regarding a student who disclosed sexual abuse. The teenage victim said they knew Dessert and explained to detectives that the abuse began at the age of nine years old.

Officials say Dessert voluntarily came to the Sheriff’s Office for an interview on Tuesday and was subsequently arrested for alleged continual sexual abuse of a child, lewd and lascivious acts with a minor 14 or 15 years of age, penetration with a foreign object of a victim under the age of 18, sexual battery, and physical abuse of a child.

Dessert was booked into jail with $425,000 bail. He posted bail and was released a few hours after being booked, according to Stanislaus County.

Dessert was reportedly employed as a patrol deputy for the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office since 2014. He was placed on paid administrative leave and his peace officer powers have been revoked.

The investigation is ongoing, officials say.  If anyone has information regarding the case, they can contact Detective J. Wall at 209-525-7038 or jwall@stansheriff.com.

Government shutdown could impact Fleet Week

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Fleet Week is up in the air this year – literally. The looming threat of a government shutdown would shut down the annual event.

“In 2013, exactly 10 years ago, there was a shutdown and the sailors and Marines could not participate, nor could the Blue Angels, we had to bow out,” said Navy spokesperson Brian O’Rourke.

In 2013, congress failed to pass a budget, throwing federal funding into a tailspin and grounding Fleet Week in San Francisco. This year, despite the looming deadline, O’Rourke says they are hoping for the best.

Staying cautiously optimistic is a common thread right now. KRON4 reached out to the SF Fleet Week Association, who in a statement said:

“San Francisco Fleet Week is standing by to take guidance from the Navy and our other military partners. Currently our staff are continuing planning as usual for the greatest Fleet Week ever. We’ll make adjustments as needed as we receive guidance.”

The Air Show Network, which puts on the programming said this:

“As of right now, nothing has been canceled and the air show is full steam ahead. We will not know the effect of the government shutdown until and if it happens.”

Fleet Week involves about 1,000 sailors and Marines as well as members of the Coast Guard.

About 1 million people come into town to watch, and that also translates into a lot of money. In fact, according to the SF Fleet Week organization, the tourism generates about $10 million.

All of this boils down to negotiations back east, so people on the West Coast will just have to watch and see how it plays out.

SMART awarded $32 million grant from the Biden administration

(KRON) – The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART) has been awarded a $32 million grant in Federal Railroad Administration, Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement funds from the Biden Administration.

According to U.S. Representative Jared Huffman, he assisted in securing the funds from the Department of Transportation through the federal government’s annual spending legislation.

“SMART is a vital artery in our communities, connecting people and commerce throughout the North Bay, said Rep. Huffman. “They have been a leader in innovative infrastructure improvements, like this project that will cut greenhouse gas emissions and provide a reliable public transportation alternative."

This grant has two significant components: $28M for the implementation of Positive Train Control Systems for SMART's 5.5-mile passenger and freight rail line between Windsor and Healdsburg and $4M for the replacement of older, high-emission freight locomotives with lower emission, environmentally sustainable Tier IV freight switcher locomotives.

Extending the passenger rail to Healdsburg and Cloverdale is an effort resulting from this grant.

“This grant is a testament to the remarkable momentum we've achieved in our mission to secure the funding necessary for the Healdsburg rail extension,  said SMART Board Chair Eric Lucan. “The recent grants we've received are due in part to the expressions of incredible community support for the northern extensions through the application process. This milestone propels us closer to realizing our vision of a more accessible and sustainable North Bay, where SMART's services reach Windsor, Healdsburg, and beyond.”
