3 years since first COVID case in Bay Area

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) – This week marks nearly three years since the Bay Area confirmed its first case of COVID-19 and changed the way we all live our lives. KRON4 sat down with the Santa Clara public health director with more about what lessons we learned over the past three years and what’s next for the virus.

Not so fast, Santa Clara County Public Health Director Sara Cody says. After three years of living with the coronavirus, we’ve adapted well as a society to living with it, but in Santa Clara County the virus is still very well circulating, based on wastewater samples.

Dr. Cody says people should have multiple layers of COVID protection, including vaccination and indoor masking. She says as a health professional, over the last three years the pandemic has shown us how underfunded the public health system is.

KRON ON is streaming news live now

“I describe the public health infrastructure as matchsticks and scotch tape,” she said.

Dr. Cody says it’s not a matter of if there will be another pandemic, it’s just a matter of when.

“All of the forces that are present that produced this pandemic are still present. They have not been mitigated,”

She says a mix of humans and wildlife, global travel, and an underfunded public health sector creates an environment for a virus to thrive and potentially start another pandemic.

San Francisco officials discuss safety ahead of Year of the Rabbit parade

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Chinatown leaders joined San Francisco officials Tuesday to talk about safety at this year’s Chinese New Year parade. The parade is set for Saturday, and it comes just weeks after a mass shooting in Monterey Park and one in Half Moon Bay - both of which targeted members of the Asian-American community.

San Francisco's Chinese New Year parade usually draws hundreds of thousands of people every year. Organizers are expecting an even bigger crowd this year with up to 1 million visitors coming to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit. That's why law enforcement says they will be working around the clock to keep the public safe.

"If you love Chinatown, now is the time to come out and hang out with us," said Malcolm Yeung, the executive director of the Chinatown Community Development Center.

San Francisco Chinatown officials are looking forward to welcoming large crowds to the neighborhood.

But along with the excitement, there is a sense of fear  -- as the Asian American Pacific Islander community reels from the two recent mass shootings that targeted people of Asian descent.

"I do understand the events over the past couple of weeks are very troubling and very unsettling,” said San Francisco Police Department Chief Bill Scott.

At a news conference at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce Tuesday, law enforcement officials announced extra patrols.

“That's why it's important that we are out there in numbers. That's why it's important that you see us, not only in the parade but in the perimeter and the communities surrounding the parade so people understand that we're out there and we're there to support them,” Scott said.

"If you see something, please let us know and say something about that. That's the only way we can bring the resources to deal with whatever challenge there might be or whatever situation may arise,” said San Francisco Sheriff Paul Miyamoto.

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins had this message to any potential perpetrators:

"Should anyone do anything of criminal nature with respect to this event that they will be held accountable. We want to make sure that this parade is celebratory, as it should be. We all across cultures get to experience the fun and the excitement of the Year of the Rabbit."

KRON ON is streaming news live now

The Year of the Rabbit symbolizes longevity, peace and prosperity – wishes for the merchants and community members impacted by the pandemic for the last three years.

"One-third of the revenue for all of Chinatown is generated in this one-month period. It's going to be an incredible day, so bring your wallets, bring your families come out and have fun,” Yeung said.

The parade starts at 5:00 p.m. Saturday. Revelers are urged to arrive early and take public transportation. If you are already in San Francisco, you can take the new central subway that takes you right into Chinatown.

VIDEO: Man has car broken into while sitting inside in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- A San Francisco man said he had his car broken into while he was sitting inside of it in Oakland. Oakland police are investigating this case and said they were surprised to hear it.

Tyson Wrensch was parked in a parking lot on 98th Avenue between Airport Access Road and Empire Road, killing time before picking up a friend at the airport.

In a security camera video, someone gets out of a light-colored SUV, looks inside his car, drives away, but then backs up. "They decide to come back, crawl down below the back of the car, reach up above the license plate and hit the button that pops up the trunk,” said Wrensch.

The person grabbed something out of the trunk, jumped back in the SUV and drove away. Wrensch heard the trunk open and assumed he had accidentally hit the button. "I hear the door go up, so I undo my seatbelt and get out. There was no one around, so I thought, ‘That's weird,’ then saw my bag was gone,” said Wrensch.

Inside the bag was his laptop, medication, clothing and passport. On Monday afternoon, he went back to the location for a meeting and was targeted for a second time.

"They came back and smashed my back window to try and steal something. Thankfully, there was nothing inside the car this time because I got smart,” said Wrensch.

KRON On is streaming news live now

He filed a report with the Oakland Police Department and showed them the video of the first incident. "The police officers that all looked at it, they were shocked. Their jaws were dropped. They said, ‘We've seen a lot, but I never seen somebody break into a car while the person was in the car,’" said Wrensch.

He said he spoke to some business owners in the area and one owner told him some days, they have 8-10 car break-ins. Wrensch wants people to stay extra vigilant, especially when sitting in their own cars.

Stanford police investigating incident in which deputy pointed gun at car driven by Black man

PALO ALTO, Calif. (KRON) -- The Stanford Department of Public Safety is reviewing an incident in which a deputy unholstered his gun and pointed it at a car driven by a Black man on Saturday, the university said. A Twitter thread posted by a Stanford PhD candidate described the incident and went viral.

"The review, which is standard practice, seeks to determine if the actions of officers indicate any policy or law violations, and whether the incident indicates any additional training needs to be conducted," Stanford DPS said.

Stanford said the incident happened Saturday night at 10:47 p.m. A Stanford DPS deputy on patrol noticed a car that was parked in a parking lot of a student residence with a pile of trash next to it.

According to Stanford, the officer illuminated the car and saw a person reclined in the front seat and delivery packages in the back. The driver said he was a delivery driver, asked if he was free to leave, and drove away.

The university said there have been package thefts on campus recently. According to Stanford, there was no proof that the man or the car was associated with a delivery company, so the officer asked dispatchers to run the vehicle's license plate number. The search found that the registered owner of the car had an arrest warrant for DUI and suspended driving privileges in California.

Another deputy stopped the car a short time later near the Escondido Village Graduate Residences on campus, Stanford said. The deputy who originally made contact with the driver and a third deputy joined the situation.

According to the school, one officer told the driver to get out of the car and walk toward the officers, but he did not comply. Another deputy then drew his gun and pointed it at the car. A third deputy unholstered his gun but kept it by his side. The driver eventually got out of the car and was handcuffed and put into a police car.

Stanford said that a further investigation revealed that the man driving the car was not its registered owner. He was cited for possession of marijuana in an unsealed container in the compartment of a moving vehicle and released.

KRON ON is streaming news live now

The Twitter thread, which was posted by Stanford PhD candidate Jessica Stovall, has been seen by more than 2 million people. Stovall said the man cursed out the officers after he was released and told them "they knew they couldn't arrest him for that." Stovall was also critical of Stanford's police response.

"I refuse to normalize this type of behavior of cops. This man was never arrested, and yet, he had a gun drawn on him," she tweeted.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office will review the incident at DPS' request. Stanford's Community Board on Public Safety will also conduct a review.

Heart attacks on dramatic rise for 25-44 age group

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- A new study has been published that links the increase in heart attacks amongst adults between the ages of 25 and 44 to COVID-19.

The study was conducted by the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and published in the Journal of Medical Virology.

Researchers discovered that overall heart attacks increased for all age groups since the onset of the pandemic by 14 percent.

By the second year of the pandemic [2022], heart attacks for the 45-64 age group increased by 19.6% and for the 65 and older group had increased by 13.7%.

However, it was the youngest age group [25-44] that had the highest increase of nearly 30%.

“There are several potential explanations for the rapid rise in cardiac deaths in patients with COVID-19, yet still many unanswered questions,” said Yee Hui Yeo, MD, first author of the study and a Cedars-Sinai physician-scientist.

“Importantly, our results highlight disparities in mortality that have emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic and that are persisting even through the Omicron era,” added Yeo.

Researchers said that prior to the pandemic, world statistics on heart attacks were decreasing but the pandemic had interrupted that progress.

“The dramatic rise in heart attacks during the pandemic has reversed what was a prior decades-long steady improvement in cardiac deaths,” said Yeo. “We are still learning the many ways by which COVID-19 affects the body, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or race.”

The team believes that there are possible explanations even this early in the research. They said that COVID-19 may trigger or accelerate those with the pre-existing condition of coronary artery disease.

KRON On is streaming live

There are external factors that the team point to for understanding this dramatic rise in heart attacks. Things like job loss, financial pressures and social anxiety which increased during the quarantine are seen as potential factors. All of these can cause acute or chronic stress which leads to heart disease.

“There is something very different about how this virus affects the cardiac risks,” said Susan Cheng, M.D. MPH, director of the Institute for Research on Healthy Aging in the Department of Cardiology at the Smidt Heart Institute and senior and co-corresponding author of the study.

“The difference is likely due to a combination of stress and inflammation, arising from predisposing factors and the way this virus biologically interacts with the cardiovascular system,” added Cheng.

Pedestrian struck, killed on I-580 at I-238

ALAMEDA COUNTY, Calif. (BCN) -- All lanes reopened at the connector between Interstate 580 and Interstate 238 Monday morning in Alameda County following a fatal collision involving a pedestrian, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman.

One eastbound lane was closed at about 5:10 a.m. following the report of the fatality, said CHP spokesman Daniel Jacowitz.

A black Honda CR-V driven by a 71-year-old Castro Valley resident collided with a 28-year-old female Turlock resident, who was pronounced dead at the scene, said Jacowitz.

The driver remained at the scene and intoxication is not believed to be a factor in the collision.

Jacowitz said the victim had exited a nearby white Chevy Malibu that was still occupied. Jacowitz said it was unclear exactly why she had exited, but the car was not disabled. Domestic violence or another dispute is not initially believed to be involved, although the investigation is ongoing.

"This is just a very tragic, sad incident, something that could have possibly been avoidable," said Jacowitz. He said CHP is reminding the public that walking on highways is inherently dangerous and to avoid doing so.

The eastbound lane on the Interstate 580 connector was closed for about 90 minutes as the investigation was underway.

Prosecutor: $100 repair bill sparked Half Moon Bay shooting

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A farmworker charged with killing seven people at two Half Moon Bay mushroom farms reportedly told investigators he was spurred to carry out the shootings after his supervisor demanded he pay $100 to repair a forklift damaged at work.

San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe confirmed to the Bay Area News Group Friday that Chunli Zhao was enraged by the equipment bill, saying that a co-worker was to blame for the collision between his forklift and the co-worker’s bulldozer.

KNTV-TV, the NBC affiliate in the San Francisco Bay Area, was first to report the development.

Authorities say Zhao, 66, shot and killed four workers and wounded a fifth employee Monday at California Terra Garden. He then went to nearby Concord Farms, where he had worked previously, and fatally shot three former co-workers.

Zhao told KNTV-TV in a courthouse interview Thursday that he committed the shootings. He said he was bullied and worked long hours on the farms and his complaints were ignored, the station reported.

On Monday, Zhao vented to his supervisor about the bill, but the supervisor insisted he needed to pay. Zhao then allegedly shot the supervisor and the co-worker, the news outlets reported.

Speaking in Mandarin, Zhao told the television station from a county jail in Redwood City that he has been in the U.S. for 11 years and has a green card. He said he has a 40-year-old daughter in China and lived with his wife in Half Moon Bay.

The coroner’s office has named six of the victims: Zhishen Liu, 73, of San Francisco; Marciano Martinez Jimenez, 50, of Moss Beach, California; Aixiang Zhang, 74, of San Francisco; Qizhong Cheng, 66, of Half Moon Bay; Jingzhi Lu, 64, of Half Moon Bay; and Yetao Bing, 43, whose hometown was unknown.

The charging documents identified Jose Romero Perez as the other person killed and Pedro Romero Perez as the eighth victim, who survived.

Bay Area police departments respond to the death of Tyre Nichols

(KRON) -- Police departments across the Bay Area have weighed in on the brutal death of Tyre Nichols after body cam footage was released to the public Friday evening. Nichols was killed after he was beaten by Memphis police officers during a traffic stop earlier this month.

San Francisco Police Department

San Ramon Police Chief Denton Carlson

Oakland Police Department

"The women and men of the Oakland Police Department are deeply troubled and disturbed by the released video involving Tyre Nichols and members of the Memphis Police Department. We stand with our community in denouncing this incident and all incidents of police brutality. Those who engage in this type of behavior have no place in our profession. Community trust and confidence are essential to police legitimacy. This incident impacts us all in law enforcement and throughout our Nation. To our community, the incident in Memphis is painful, however, it does not represent the women and men of the Oakland Police Department. The members of the Oakland Police Department are committed to building trust and strengthening community relationships. We train our officers to uphold the values of fairness, dignity, and respect. We extend our deepest condolences to Tyre Nichols’ family and community."

Antioch Police Department

Novato Police Chief Beth Johnson

"Feelings of shock, sadness, and anger may overwhelm us after watching the videos of Mr. Trye Nichols’ death play out at the hands of five Memphis police officers. The actions of the officers violated the fundamental values of our profession. While the justice system has begun the process of accountability for the involved officers, I want to acknowledge the pain this incident has caused and to reassure our community this heinous act does not represent the values, principles, and training of the Novato Police Department. Every member of our department is dedicated to serving this community with integrity, decency, and compassion. This devastating situation and failure to preserve life, reminds us to always stand up for what is right and to stand together through adversity."

Santa Clara Police Department

Walnut Creek Police Department

Fremont Police Chief Sean Washington

"Words cannot express my disappointment in what appears to be a disregard for life and inhumane treatment of others. In a moment, a family has lost a loved one; a community is fractured; the excellent work happening every day at more than 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the U.S. is undermined. I denounce and condemn these actions and expect law enforcement personnel to feel the same. Fremont Police Department profoundly values the sanctity of life and strives to earn our community’s trust daily. We are expected to perform our duties with respect, fairness, and dignity. I believe we have one of the most professional, competent, and capable police departments in the nation. We trust our personnel to deliver service consistent with community expectations and aligned with law and policy."

San Jose Police Department

Berkeley Police Department

"The men and women of the Berkeley Police Department condemn, and are appalled by, the incident involving Memphis Police Officers that led to the tragic death of Tyre Nichols.  The impact of excessive force is profoundly disturbing and undermines our efforts to build and maintain trust with our diverse community; a trust that we understand is essential to community policing. The Berkeley Police Department remains committed to upholding our core values of service with integrity, respect and professionalism at all times, to every community member. We stand with our community in denouncing this incident and all incidents of police brutality. This never should have happened to Tyre Nichols and we offer our sincerest condolences to his family and friends."

Sausalito Police Department

Menlo Park Police Department

Marin County Sheriff Jamie Scardina

"After viewing the video from the Memphis Police Department, I am shocked, angry and frustrated. While the officers are being held accountable and their consequences will be determined in a court of law, there is no doubt that their actions will impact Law Enforcement as a whole. I want to make it clear that the Marin County Sheriff’s Office considers the actions of the police officers in Memphis to be against everything we believe. We will continue our hard work of making sure that everyone our personnel encounters is treated with decency and fairness."

Pacifica Police Department

San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus

“What we saw in that video was indefensible, sickening, and beyond understanding. This is a sad day for Mr. Nichols’ family and our nation. What I saw those police officers do to Tyre Nichols is deeply disturbing, and their actions stain our profession. I condemn what’s seen in this video in the strongest possible terms. The actions of these officers greatly damaged the trust between law enforcement and the communities we serve. But I will redouble my commitment to serving, protecting, and engaging with our communities with compassion, respect, integrity, and dignity.”

KRON4 Exclusive: Attorney Ben Crump weighs in on Tyre Nichols' death

(KRON) -- Civil rights attorney Ben Crump represents Tyre Nichols' family. Friday night, he sat down with KRON4’s Justin Campbell to talk about what he thinks should happen next.

“It’s so hard to watch these officers continue to brutalize this young man to the point of him dying,” Crump said.

Crump says he was given the body camera footage -- showing five officers kicking, pepper spraying, and tasing Nichols in early January after a traffic stop. Nichols died three days later. Crump believes the Memphis officers handled it wrong from the start.

“They had 106 minutes and 30 seconds,” Crump said. “They could have de-escalated this from the first moment they interacted with him.”

The five officers have since been fired from the department and charged with second-degree murder. which can lead to 15 to 60 years in prison in Tennessee. But Crump and Attorney Arthur Reed say they believe more charges may need to come.

“There may have been some room to increase the charges, as well as there are some other officers on the scene that may need to be charged, after looking at the video frame by frame,” Crump said.

“The best part, they have already been arrested and indicted, and been fired, not at home on a vacation eating up the taxpayer money,” said Reed, who also represents Nichols.

Attorney Crump says police officers must change how they interact with people of color.

“We don’t see our white brothers and sisters who are unarmed face this type of excessive force. Where are those videos?” Crump asked. “We see videos repeatedly of Black people, especially unarmed Black men, killed by the police… and those videos are everywhere.”

Video: Footage of Paul Pelosi attack released

Warning: Graphic and explicit video

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Footage of the attack on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband Paul Pelosi was released Friday morning.

Police body cam footage

Body cam footage from shows the San Francisco police officer walking up to the door. DePape and Pelosi answer the door. DePape is holding a hammer as well as Pelosi's arm. Pelosi also seems to have a hand on the hammer.

Police ask what's going on. DePape appears to be smiling when answering, "Everything's good."

Pelosi then lets go of the hammer and tries to move away from DePape before DePape swings the hammer at Pelosi. Police enter the home and tackle DePape to the ground.

Pelosi can be seen lying on the ground seemingly unconscious while police gain control of DePape.

Police then call for back up and medical assistance.

San Francisco Superior Court Judge Stephen M. Murphy ultimately ruled that there was no reason to keep the video out of the public view and from the media, adding that prosecutors have already played portions of it in open court--meaning people have seen it.

The San Francisco District Attorney's Office argued that releasing the footage to news media outlets would only allow people to manipulate it leading to false information being spread.

Ahead of the release, Representative Pelosi did comment on the video saying her husband's wellbeing is her biggest concern.

"My biggest concern is my husband's wellbeing, and we take that day to day," Pelosi said. "I'm really grateful for the outpouring of prayers and support for him and that is what our focus is."

Pelosi added that she wasn't sure if she would watch the video upon its release.

"It will be a very hard thing to watch an assault on my husband's life," Pelosi said.

David DePape, 42, is currently behind bars for the attack and is facing both state and federal charges including breaking in the Pelosi home and beating Paul Pelosi with a hammer. Additionally, police believe DePape planned to kidnap Nancy Pelosi.

DePape has pleaded not guilty to both the federal and state charges.

'Like Peyton Manning': 49ers teammates rave about Brock Purdy

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The San Francisco 49ers are on the verge of a Super Bowl berth, needing to just beat the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday to reach the big game. Miraculously, their run has come with the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft under center.

The 49ers have not lost a game since turning to rookie quarterback Brock Purdy when Jimmy Garropolo injured his foot against the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 4. Purdy tossed 332 yards and three touchdowns to beat Seattle in the Wild Card round and avoided turning the ball over against a tough Dallas defense to help San Francisco reach the NFC Championship Game.

Along the way, Purdy has won over his 49ers teammates. Several players on both sides of the ball have talked openly about the rookie impressing them with his toughness, skills and leadership.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel became a Purdy fan during the 49ers' final preseason game in Houston. San Francisco was shut out, but Purdy threw for a game-high 182 yards.

“I go back to preseason against Houston,” Samuel told the Mercury News. “How he just had this attitude and this competitive edge to himself, like if he messes up, he’ll do it full speed and we’ll talk about it at the end of the day.”

Several of Purdy's teammates talked about his fearlessness when dealing with older teammates. That especially struck left tackle Trent Williams, a 13-year NFL veteran who gave Purdy a lofty comparison.

“You would think he’s been in the league 15 years,” Williams said. “If you’re talking, he’ll say, ‘Shut your a** up.’ He ain’t no timid rookie feeling his way around. He will get on your a**. You would think he’s like Peyton Manning or something."

Against the Seahawks on Dec. 15, Purdy started a game on Thursday Night Football while battling an oblique injury. But even on short rest, Purdy did not let the injury affect him, throwing for 217 yards and two touchdowns.

"For him to not show any pain in his face or mannerisms or anything shows a lot about who he is,” defensive end Nick Bosa said.

The intangibles are impressive, but it still takes a good deal of skill to excel as an NFL quarterback. Purdy has repeatedly shown the ability to make daring plays, dodging pass rushers and making throws into traffic.

"He's made some crazy plays. His feet are wild and the way he gets out of the pocket is honestly funny to watch because I'm just like, 'What are you doing?' sometimes. But it works," tight end George Kittle said on the Pat McAfee Show.

The 49ers had plenty of success under Garoppolo, but he was never able to take them over the hump and win a Super Bowl. His teammates are hoping that Purdy could be the missing piece they need.

"I can't talk enough about the poise and how incredible of a piece he's been for us," linebacker Fred Warner said on The Rich Eisen Show. "Because he had to obviously prove he's capable of leading us to where we are now, and he's done that. It's a story you can't draw up any better."

The 49ers and Eagles will kick off at noon on Sunday. Purdy will have a new test — his first road playoff game.
